BREAKING: Obama: 8,400 U.S. troops to stay in Afghanistan, instead of 5,500 that were planned

  The United States will keep 8,400 troops in Afghanistan into early 2017, President Obama announced Wednesday. That is a change from the previous plan, which called for 5,500 troops by the end of 2016. The security situation in Afghanistan, Obama said, "remains precarious." U.S. forces have recently stepped up their air war against Taliban forces in the country as part of a renewed effort to help the Afghan government.
