The Republican National Convention kicked off in Cleveland Monday night, opening amid turbulence within the party and across the nation. Highlights: 1. The evening's theme was "Make America Safe Again," a turn on presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump's ubiquitous slogan, "Make America Great Again." 2. Trump made the unprecedented move of showing up onstage. 3. Trump's wife, Melania, was introduced to a national audience with a speech that was initially well-received, but was later criticized for portions that were strikingly similar to Michelle Obama's 2008 Democratic National Convention speech. 4. Much of the program focused on criticism of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. The mother of a State Department employee killed in the attacks in Benghazi, Libya, said she blamed Clinton for her son's death. Follow USA TODAY for ongoing coverage of the four-day event.
