BREAKING: Senate approves deal to prevent government shutdown

  The Senate broke its impasse Wednesday and approved a deal to keep the government funded past Friday. The deal, which would avert a shutdown on Saturday, provides stop-gap funding for federal agencies through Dec. 9 and provides $1.1 billion to combat the Zika virus. Democrats dropped their objections to the measure when Republicans agreed to also address funding in a separate bill for Flint, Mich., to upgrade its water system. The House is expected to approve the legislation soon.
