Roof, 22, was convicted in the shooting deaths of nine black parishioners at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church on June 17, 2015. A self-described white supremacist who posted a racist manifesto online, Roof confessed to the killings, and his defense team conceded his guilt during the trial. Jurors can sentence Roof to death or life imprisonment without parole in the sentencing phase, scheduled for January. Roof has said in court filings he will represent himself at that time.
